Very Heavy Uncle Show Home Page
Well kids, the numbers are in. And we did all right for the first episode after a three month holiday. Sure, I expected us to do better (a LOT better - to be honest), but I'm willing to attribute that to a worldwide case of "nobody knew."
And that's the subject of our little pep talk today.
FACT: Podcasts are 5% recording and 95% begging people to listen.
And sadly, as big as the Internet is, there are only so many ways to promote a podcast:
- Blogs
- YouTube channels
- Bulletin boards/discussion groups
- Links/plugs on OTHER PEOPLE'S blogs/podcasts/websites, etc.
And even after posting in 6 different Facebook Podcast groups, banging out a few tweets and a new blog entry, PLUS posting on whatever bulletin board MIGHT be frequented by budding listeners... you've hit MAYBE 1% of your potential audience. And that sucks.
ANOTHER FACT: Podcasts rely HEAVILY on word-of-mouth from their listeners to grow. And a LOT of them die on the vine because listeners don't take the minimal time and effort to spread the word about their favorite podcasts to friends, colleagues and acquaintances who MIGHT enjoy them too!.
It's NOT hard. It takes VERY little effort. And sometimes it makes all the difference as to whether a show like VHUS gets a spot in the Metal Top 10 every day... or goes an entire day without a SINGLE listen world-wide.
UNCLE'S BIGGEST PET-PEEVE (well, one of many): I post plugs for VHUS on Facebook and Twitter almost every day. And sometimes a few people "LIKE" them. THAT'S GREAT! I really appreciate it. But... the promotional effectiveness of a LIKE is essentially ZERO. Sure, it tells ME that you like the programme, but it tells NO ONE ELSE. A much-needed opportunity for promotion is wasted. Hundreds/thousands of potential listeners go un-informed. (A little over-dramatic, huh?)
TL;DR: As much as I appreciate the LIKES, please SHARE promotional posts on your own pages & accounts. Tweeps: If you're going to click that little red heart on a VHUS promo, please take an extra 5 seconds and RETWEET the bastard! THAT'S the publicity podcasts need, especially this one.

CLOSING REMARKS: A lot of people who visit our Pod-O-Matic homepage completely miss all the neat links on the sidebar, and that's a shame. I always make a point of encouraging you punks to BUY the music you hear on VHUS, and most of those links make it dead easy.
Please patronize the labels who issue the music you hear on this show, and ESPECIALLY spend some $$$ with these progressive music superstores (You won't find a lot of this stuff on Amazon).
